How I Fell in Love with Finca La Flor
After my first trip to Costa Rica, the Finca became my "safe place", the one you use in guided meditation when they tell you to visualize a warm, comfortable place that feels like home. In the freezing Bostonian winter, in my morning subway ride, I would remember my friends at the Finca, the birds, the smells, the soft morning light, and the warmth!
I had never worked in a farm before and had no previous experience of manual labor, but neither did any of the other volunteers I met there. We worked together, learned a lot, sweated a lot, and although we were hungry and tired at the end of the morning, it never felt like work because we had so much fun. In the years following my trip I sent many friends from all over the world to the Finca. Some were looking for an alternative Spanish course, some wanted to learn about organic farming or were going surfing on the coast and wanted to balance this out with a more grounding experience; others wanted a peaceful place to recharge their batteries. All left with a feeling of a life-changing experience.
When I had my baby I took a year off to learn how to be a mom and travel around the world at the same time. After several months in Europe and the Middle East, I knew that I wanted to spend a good chunk of time in the Finca to rest, and learn more about medicinal plants, composting, and organic farming. We spent almost two months there. Our daughter Emma learned to walk there, fed the animals, tasted her first solid foods, and it was the most wonderful feeling to see her blossom in this environment. I worked, taught yoga, made friends from England, Australia, Germany, Costa Rica and Canada, and I made plans for the future. I came back to Boston renewed and full of energy, again.
